Una Carlin was born in Derry. She studied singing at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and graduated from there in 1994 having gained her GRNCM and Professional Performers Diploma.
After leaving the RNCM, Una enjoyed a very successful career for many years on operatic and concert platforms. Most notably she worked for such companies as English Touring Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and English National Opera, in the latter of which she spent six years as a full-time chorister.
After leaving to return to Derry in 2003, Una returned to ENO on several occasions as a principal artist. Other work after re-joining the freelance circuit included tours to Berlin and Salzburg with European Voices under Sir Simon Rattle and Berlin Philharmonic, appearances with the Ulster Orchestra, and numerous recitals including performances with leading classical guitarist Craig Ogden.
When Una returned to Derry she quickly established herself as a singing teacher where she took up the post of vocal coach at the Magee Campus of the University of Ulster and acted as the North West Representative for TOSINI (Teachers in singing in Northern Ireland). Having also acquired an interest in Music in the Early Years, Una formed ‘Rhythm Tots and ‘Rhythm kids’, delivering music sessions in community settings and school settings.
This newfound passion led her to take up a post in 2006 with the EA music service as a tutor on the highly successful ‘Musical Pathway to Learning’ programme which she helped pilot and devise. Over recent years Una has been instrumental in piloting a very successful ‘Vocal Programme’ for the EA music service with her colleagues on the MPL team.
Una is delighted to be joining the team at St Columb’s School of Music.
